Job Description

AECOM is seeking a dedicated and passionate Botanist to join our dynamic environmental consulting team in Glasgow, Scotland. This is an exceptional opportunity for an enthusiastic botanist eager to contribute to significant ecological projects across Scotland and the wider UK. The role involves conducting flora and habitat surveys, providing expert botanical advice, and contributing to ecological impact assessments for a diverse portfolio of projects including infrastructure development, conservation, and land management. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed botanical and habitat surveys using standard methodologies (e.g., NVC, Phase 1, UKHAB).
  • Identify and record vascular plants, bryophytes, and lichens with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Prepare high-quality ecological reports, including baseline surveys, impact assessments, and mitigation strategies.
  • Provide expert botanical advice to clients and project teams.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including zoologists, hydrologists, and planners.
  • Utilise GIS and other relevant software for data management and mapping.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant wildlife legislation and planning policies.
  • Contribute to tender proposals and project management tasks.
  • Mentor junior staff and promote best practices in botanical survey work.
  • Travel to various field sites across Scotland and occasionally the wider UK.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in botanical identification of Scottish flora, including rare and protected species.
  • Strong understanding of UK habitat classification systems (NVC, Phase 1, UKHAB).
  • Demonstrable experience in conducting ecological fieldwork and surveys.
  • Proficiency in report writing and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor conditions.
  • Full UK driving license (or equivalent international license with commitment to obtain UK license).
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Botany, Ecology, Conservation, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping and data management.
  • Eligibility for visa sponsorship in the UK.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., CIEEM).
  • Experience with protected species licensing procedures.
  • Familiarity with Scottish planning policy and environmental legislation.
  • Experience in ecological impact assessment (EcIA).
  • Specialist knowledge in particular plant groups (e.g., bryophytes, lichens, aquatic plants).
  • Experience with biodiversity net gain assessments.
