Job Description
As a Border Services Officer, you will be at the forefront of national security, diligently enforcing U.S. laws and regulations at designated points of entry. This critical role involves inspecting individuals, vehicles, and cargo, utilizing advanced technology and your keen judgment to prevent illegal activities while facilitating lawful commerce and travel. You will uphold national security interests, protect public health and safety, and contribute to the economic vitality of the United States. This position requires integrity, vigilance, and a strong commitment to public service in a dynamic and challenging environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct primary and secondary inspections of persons, conveyances, and merchandise arriving in or departing from the United States.
- Enforce U.S. immigration, customs, agriculture, and other federal laws and regulations.
- Identify and interdict illegal narcotics, weapons, counterfeit goods, and other prohibited items.
- Utilize advanced screening technologies, x-ray machines, and K9 units for inspection purposes.
- Interview travelers and conduct examinations to determine admissibility and compliance with federal statutes.
- Prepare detailed reports on inspections, seizures, and enforcement actions.
- Collaborate with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
- Respond to and manage emergency situations, including threats to national security or public safety.
- Maintain high standards of ethical conduct and professionalism.
Required Skills
- U.S. Citizenship (mandatory)
- Excellent observational and analytical skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, both written and verbal
- Ability to make critical decisions under pressure in fast-paced environments
- High level of integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct
- Physical fitness to meet job demands, including standing for long periods, lifting, and self-defense
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and data entry
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Homeland Security, or a related field
- Fluency in a second language, particularly Spanish, French, or Arabic
- Prior experience in law enforcement, military service, or security operations
