Job Description

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a dedicated and vigilant Bailiff to ensure the safety and security of all individuals within the courtrooms and judicial facilities in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This critical role involves maintaining order, enforcing court rules, and protecting judges, juries, witnesses, and the general public. The successful candidate will play a fundamental part in upholding the integrity and security of the judicial process, contributing directly to public safety and the rule of law.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain order and decorum in the courtroom during all proceedings.
• Provide security for judges, court personnel, jurors, witnesses, and the general public.
• Escort defendants to and from the courtroom, ensuring their secure custody and safe transport.
• Enforce all court rules and directives issued by the presiding judge.
• Conduct thorough inspections of courtrooms for security breaches, contraband, or potential hazards.
• Manage evidence, ensuring its proper handling, security, and chain of custody.
• Respond effectively to emergencies, disturbances, or security incidents within the courthouse.
• Serve legal documents, warrants, and other court orders as required.
• Assist in the protection and movement of high-profile individuals or sensitive materials.

Required Skills

• High School Diploma or GED
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in law enforcement, security, or military service
• Strong observational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal abilities
• Ability to remain calm, authoritative, and decisive in high-pressure or stressful situations
• Proficiency in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques
• Valid South Dakota Driver's License and a clean driving record
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, physical examination, and psychological evaluation
• Physical fitness to perform duties including standing for long periods, lifting, and responding to physical altercations

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or a related field
• Certification in first aid, CPR, and AED
• Prior experience as a certified law enforcement officer or court security personnel
• In-depth knowledge of South Dakota judicial procedures, laws, and court protocols
• Experience with security technology and surveillance systems
