Job Description
Southwest Airlines is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aviation Safety Inspector to join our operational safety team in Reno, Nevada. This critical role is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of safety compliance across all aspects of our airline operations, including aircraft maintenance, flight operations, ground handling, and personnel training. The Aviation Safety Inspector will conduct thorough inspections, audits, and investigations to identify potential hazards, recommend corrective actions, and verify the effectiveness of safety management systems, contributing directly to the continued safety and reliability of our fleet and services. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct scheduled and unscheduled inspections of aircraft, equipment, facilities, and operational procedures to ensure compliance with FAA regulations and company safety standards.
- Monitor flight operations, ground handling, maintenance activities, and training programs for adherence to safety protocols.
- Investigate aviation incidents, accidents, and reported safety concerns, determining root causes and developing preventative measures.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, audit findings, and investigation summaries with clear recommendations for corrective action.
- Collaborate with various departments, including Flight Operations, Maintenance, Ground Operations, and Training, to implement and improve safety initiatives.
- Participate in the development and review of safety policies, procedures, and manuals.
- Provide expert advice and guidance on aviation safety matters to management and operational personnel.
- Stay current with industry best practices, regulatory changes, and advancements in aviation safety technology.
- Maintain accurate records of all inspections, audits, and corrective actions.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in aviation safety, maintenance, flight operations, or a related field.
- FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license or Commercial Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating, or equivalent military experience.
- Thorough understanding of FAA regulations (e.g., Part 121, 145) and industry safety standards.
- Proven ability to conduct detailed inspections, audits, and investigations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration.
- Proficiency in using safety management software and office applications.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Unrestricted right to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Aviation Safety, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) implementation and auditing.
- Previous experience as an Aviation Safety Inspector with an airline or regulatory body.
- Additional FAA certifications (e.g., Inspector Authorization, Dispatcher Certificate).
- Knowledge of human factors in aviation safety.
