Job Description

The State’s Attorney’s Office for Baltimore City is actively seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Assistant State’s Attorney to join our esteemed legal team. This critical role involves managing and prosecuting a diverse caseload of criminal offenses, from initial charging decisions and investigations through trial advocacy and sentencing. The successful candidate will represent the State in various court proceedings, collaborate extensively with law enforcement, victim services, and community partners, and play a direct role in achieving fair and just outcomes. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a comprehensive and demanding caseload of criminal prosecutions, encompassing both misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Conduct thorough legal research, prepare compelling legal documents, and draft precise motions, briefs, and other court filings.
  • Represent the State in all court proceedings, including arraignments, bond hearings, motions hearings, jury trials, and sentencing.
  • Interview and prepare witnesses, victims, and law enforcement officers for effective testimony.
  • Negotiate appropriate plea agreements with defense counsel, ensuring the interests of justice and victim advocacy are prioritized.
  • Collaborate effectively and build strong relationships with law enforcement agencies, victim advocates, and other judicial system stakeholders.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving criminal law, procedural rules, and relevant court decisions.
  • Adhere strictly to the highest ethical standards and professional conduct in all aspects of practice.

Required Skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active admission in good standing to the Maryland Bar (or eligibility for admission by waiver or exam).
  • Proven experience in criminal prosecution or defense, or substantial trial advocacy experience gained through internships or clerkships.
  • Exceptional legal research, analytical, and persuasive writing skills.
  • Strong oral advocacy and confident courtroom presentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a demanding caseload efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a prosecutor, public defender, or judicial law clerk.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service and community justice initiatives.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages relevant to Baltimore's diverse population to enhance community engagement.
