Job Description
UMKC seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented Archivist to join our Special Collections team. This role is crucial for managing, preserving, and making accessible the university’s historical records, manuscripts, and unique collections. The Archivist will play a key role in ensuring the long-term preservation of our institutional memory and supporting scholarly research. Key Responsibilities
- Appraise, acquire, arrange, and describe archival collections according to national and international standards (e.g., DACS, EAD).
- Develop and implement preservation strategies for both physical and born-digital materials.
- Provide expert reference services to researchers, faculty, students, and the general public.
- Create and update finding aids, catalog records, and other access tools.
- Participate in outreach activities, including exhibitions, presentations, and social media.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of digital asset management systems and digital preservation workflows.
- Train and supervise student assistants and interns.
- Engage in professional development activities and stay current with best practices in archives and records management.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program with a concentration in archives.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional archival experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory, best practices, and national descriptive standards (e.g., DACS).
- Experience with archival management systems and collection databases.
- Familiarity with digital preservation principles and practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with a specific archival management system (e.g., ArchivesSpace, Archon).
- Experience working with diverse collections, including university records, rare books, or unique cultural materials.
- Knowledge of copyright, privacy, and access issues related to archival collections.
- Experience providing instruction or leading workshops.
- Familiarity with grant writing or project management.
- Ability to speak a second language.
