Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Government Counsel to join our legal team in Calgary. This pivotal role involves providing expert legal advice and representation on a wide range of issues affecting the provincial government. The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting policy development, legislative initiatives, and litigation matters, ensuring compliance with legal standards and protecting the interests of Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice and opinions to various government ministries, departments, and agencies.
  • Draft, review, and interpret legislation, regulations, policies, and contracts.
  • Represent the Government of Alberta in civil litigation, administrative hearings, and alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on complex legal issues.
  • Advise on constitutional law, administrative law, privacy law, and other areas relevant to government operations.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve legal objectives and effective governance.
  • Stay current with legal developments and their potential impact on government operations.

Required Skills

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-call experience in legal practice, preferably with experience in public law, administrative law, or litigation.
  • Exceptional legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, and a strong ethical compass.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within a government legal department or advising government entities.
  • Specialization in areas such as environmental law, regulatory law, or Indigenous law.
  • Experience in legislative drafting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
