Job Description

As a Public Safety Coordinator at BJC HealthCare, you will be instrumental in ensuring a secure and safe environment for our patients, visitors, and staff across our facilities. This critical role involves developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs, emergency preparedness plans, and security protocols. You will work collaboratively with various departments to conduct risk assessments, provide safety training, manage incident reporting systems, and ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal safety regulations. Your expertise will directly contribute to maintaining BJC HealthCare’s commitment to excellence in patient care and operational safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and implement public safety policies and procedures in alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and drills (e.g., fire, disaster preparedness) across BJC HealthCare facilities.
  • Lead and facilitate safety training programs for employees, ensuring a high level of awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Manage and investigate safety incidents, accidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with security, facilities, HR, and clinical departments to integrate safety practices into all operational aspects.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with OSHA, NFPA, HIPAA, and other relevant federal, state, and local safety and health regulations.
  • Maintain and update emergency response plans, acting as a key point of contact during crises.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to security systems, equipment, and safety technology.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in public safety, security management, or emergency preparedness, preferably in a healthcare or large institutional setting.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations, including OSHA, NFPA, and local emergency management standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for training, reporting, and inter-departmental collaboration.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management abilities, with keen attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond to emergencies calmly and decisively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CHSP, FEMA certifications, ASIS CPP/PSP).
  • Experience working with diverse teams in a complex organizational structure.
  • Familiarity with healthcare-specific safety challenges and regulations.
