Job Description
As a Public Benefits Specialist at Providence St. Joseph Health, you will play a crucial role in assisting patients and their families in navigating complex public benefits systems. Your work will ensure access to essential healthcare services and financial support, embodying our mission of compassionate care. This position requires strong advocacy skills, a deep understanding of state and federal programs, and a commitment to serving diverse populations within our community.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patient eligibility for various public benefits programs (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, TANF, SSI/SSDI).
- Provide expert guidance and direct assistance to patients and families throughout the application, appeal, and enrollment processes for public benefits.
- Liaise with government agencies, community organizations, and internal departments to facilitate timely and accurate benefits acquisition.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in public benefits laws, regulations, and eligibility criteria.
- Educate patients and staff on available resources and benefits, promoting health literacy and access.
- Document all interactions and outcomes accurately in patient records and internal systems.
- Advocate on behalf of patients to resolve complex benefits issues and overcome systemic barriers.
- Participate in team meetings and professional development to enhance service delivery.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Public Health, Human Services, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in public benefits counseling, case management, or a similar advocacy role.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state public benefits programs (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, TANF) relevant to Washington State.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to empathize and build rapport with diverse populations.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing complex caseloads and documentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Social Work or Public Health.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish, Somali, or other languages prevalent in the Seattle area).
- Experience working within a hospital or large healthcare system.
- Certification as a benefits counselor or equivalent professional credential.
