Job Description
UPMC is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated students for our Summer Healthcare Internship program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This immersive, on-site internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and complex healthcare environment. Interns will be placed in various departments based on their interests and academic background, supporting critical operations, contributing to real-world projects, and learning directly from experienced healthcare professionals and leaders. Key Responsibilities
- Assist healthcare professionals and administrative staff with daily tasks and project support within assigned departments.
- Participate actively in departmental projects, research initiatives, and quality improvement efforts.
- Observe and learn about patient care processes, clinical procedures, and operational workflows (where permitted and appropriate).
- Attend and contribute to educational sessions, workshops, and shadowing opportunities provided by UPMC.
- Contribute to data collection, analysis, and preparation of reports or presentations.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all UPMC policies and procedures, including HIPAA regulations.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, interdisciplinary staff, and internal stakeholders.
- Develop and present a culminating project or summary of learning experiences at the end of the internship.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program (preferably in a healthcare-related field, science, public health, business administration, or a related discipline).
- Strong academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated genuine interest in the healthcare industry and a desire to learn.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer, work, or shadowing experience in a hospital, clinic, or other healthcare setting.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology and healthcare systems.
- Ability to commit to the full duration of the summer internship program (typically 8-10 weeks).
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Leadership experience in academic or extracurricular activities.
