Job Description
General Motors is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our dynamic legal team at our headquarters in Detroit. This pivotal role offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive legal advice and support across various business units within a global automotive leader. Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal advice and support to various business units on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial contracts, including supplier agreements, sales agreements, technology licenses, and partnership agreements.
- Conduct thorough legal research and analysis, preparing memoranda and opinions on various legal issues, regulations, and industry standards.
- Assist in managing and advising on litigation, disputes, and regulatory inquiries.
- Ensure compliance with local, national, and international laws and regulations pertinent to the automotive industry.
- Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including compliance, engineering, finance, and human resources teams.
- Develop and deliver training sessions on legal topics relevant to the company's operations.
- Stay abreast of legal and regulatory developments impacting the global automotive sector.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state (Michigan bar admission preferred or ability to obtain soon after hire).
- Minimum of 5 years of post-bar experience in corporate law, commercial law, or a related field at a reputable law firm or in-house legal department.
- Proven ability to draft and negotiate complex legal documents.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with international business transactions and cross-border legal issues.
- Familiarity with intellectual property, product liability, or regulatory compliance within the automotive industry.
- Experience working with or advising on aspects related to U.S. immigration law in a corporate context.
- Multilingual capabilities, particularly in languages relevant to GM's global operations.
- Proven track record of managing multiple priorities and projects effectively.
