Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Tax Collection Officer to join our team in Bangor, Maine. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and resolving overdue tax-related accounts, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. This role requires excellent negotiation skills, a strong understanding of tax laws, and a commitment to providing exceptional client service while upholding the bank’s ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of overdue tax-related accounts, initiating contact with clients to secure payment arrangements.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into client financial situations to determine appropriate collection strategies.
  • Negotiate payment plans and settlements in accordance with established policies and legal guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all communication and collection activities.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax collection laws and bank policies.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and legal counsel as needed to resolve complex collection cases.
  • Provide clear and concise explanations to clients regarding their tax obligations and payment options.
  • Prepare and process necessary documentation related to tax collection and recovery efforts.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in debt collection, preferably in a financial or tax-related context.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state tax laws and collection procedures.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and collection software.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Certification in debt collection or tax law.
  • Experience working with a major financial institution.
  • Familiarity with Maine state tax regulations.
