Job Description

McGill University is seeking a dedicated and experienced Archivist to join our Library and Archives team. This full-time, on-site position is open to candidates requiring visa sponsorship. The successful candidate will be responsible for the appraisal, acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, and access to archival collections, ensuring their long-term integrity and accessibility for research and educational purposes. This role involves working with a diverse range of materials, from historical documents to digital records, and contributing to the intellectual life of the university community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Appraise, acquire, and process new archival collections, including donations and university records.
  • Arrange and describe archival materials according to professional standards (e.g., RAD, DACS, ISAD(G)).
  • Create and maintain finding aids, descriptive records, and access tools for physical and digital collections.
  • Implement preservation strategies for various formats, including physical documents, photographs, and born-digital materials.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to students, faculty, and external researchers.
  • Participate in outreach activities, including exhibitions, presentations, and educational programs.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of archival policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with other library departments and university units on interdisciplinary projects.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Archival Studies, Library and Information Science (with an archival specialization), or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience working in an archival setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory, principles, and best practices.
  • Experience with archival descriptive standards (e.g., RAD, DACS) and content management systems.
  • Proficiency in digital preservation techniques and tools for born-digital and digitized materials.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with specific archival management software (e.g., ArchivesSpace, AtoM).
  • Familiarity with Canadian archival practices and legal frameworks.
  • Proficiency in French and English (spoken and written).
  • Experience with grant writing or project management in an archival context.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property rights and access restrictions related to archival materials.
