Job Description
Glenbow Museum is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Conservator to join our dynamic team. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced professional to contribute to the preservation of diverse collections, including historical artifacts, fine art, and cultural heritage items. The successful candidate will be responsible for the examination, documentation, and treatment of objects, ensuring their long-term stability and integrity. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct condition assessments, examinations, and scientific analysis of collection objects.
- Develop and implement conservation treatment plans for a variety of materials including textiles, paper, wood, metal, and ethnographic objects.
- Document all conservation activities thoroughly using written reports, photographic records, and scientific data.
- Provide advice on environmental control, storage, handling, and display of collections to ensure preventive conservation.
- Participate in exhibition planning and installation, ensuring the safe movement and display of artifacts.
- Research and apply new conservation techniques and materials, staying current with best practices in the field.
- Collaborate with curators, registrars, and other museum staff on collection management projects.
- Supervise and mentor junior staff, interns, or volunteers as required.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Conservation, Museum Studies with a conservation specialization, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of post-graduate experience in conservation within a museum or similar cultural institution.
- Demonstrated expertise in the conservation of a diverse range of materials (e.g., ethnographic, textiles, paper, metals, paintings).
- Proficiency in scientific analysis techniques relevant to conservation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Meticulous attention to detail and manual dexterity.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with visa sponsorship processes and willingness to relocate to Calgary, Canada.
- Proficiency in French or another additional language.
- Experience with digital imaging and database management systems for conservation records.
- A portfolio showcasing previous conservation projects and treatments.
