Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legislative Drafter to join our dynamic Public Policy & Government Affairs team in Oakland, CA. The successful candidate will play a critical role in researching, analyzing, and drafting legislative proposals, amendments, and related legal documents for various governmental bodies, advocacy groups, and corporate clients. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, a deep understanding of legislative processes, and the ability to translate complex policy objectives into clear, concise, and legally sound language.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and analyze existing laws, regulations, and legislative proposals to understand their scope and impact.
- Draft new legislative texts, amendments, resolutions, reports, and other legal documents, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to legal drafting standards.
- Collaborate with attorneys, policy advisors, lobbyists, and stakeholders to refine legislative language and achieve desired policy outcomes.
- Monitor legislative developments and provide timely updates and analysis on emerging issues relevant to client interests.
- Prepare comprehensive legal memoranda, summaries, and presentations on legislative matters.
- Assist in the development of legislative strategies and policy positions.
- Review and provide constructive feedback on drafts prepared by others.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Active membership in good standing with the California State Bar
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in legislative drafting or a closely related field (e.g., legislative counsel, policy analyst, government affairs)
- Demonstrated expertise in legislative research and analysis
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to draft complex legal documents clearly and precisely
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local legislative processes
- Proficiency in legal research platforms (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working directly with legislative bodies or government agencies
- Background in public policy, administrative law, or constitutional law
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
