Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Government Industrial Hygienist to join our team in Dundee. This critical role involves protecting workers from health hazards in various public and private sector workplaces across Scotland. You will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling environmental factors and stresses arising in or from the workplace that may cause sickness, impaired health and wellbeing, or significant discomfort among workers or citizens of the community. Your expertise will contribute directly to the enforcement of health and safety legislation and the promotion of best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting comprehensive workplace assessments to identify potential health hazards such as chemical exposures, noise, vibration, radiation, and biological agents.
- Developing and implementing strategies for hazard control, including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Performing quantitative exposure assessments, including air sampling, noise monitoring, and ergonomic evaluations.
- Interpreting complex data and providing expert advice to employers, employees, and other stakeholders on compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Investigating incidents of occupational ill health and recommending preventative measures.
- Preparing detailed reports, scientific papers, and presentations on industrial hygiene findings and recommendations.
- Liaising with other regulatory bodies, local authorities, and public health organizations.
- Delivering training and educational programs on industrial hygiene principles and practices.
- Contributing to the development and review of national health and safety policies and guidance.
Required Skills
- Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
- Proven experience as an Industrial Hygienist, preferably within a government or regulatory context.
- Strong understanding of UK health and safety legislation (e.g., HSWA 1974, COSHH, Noise at Work Regulations).
- Proficiency in conducting various industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring techniques.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
- Strong report writing and presentation skills.
- Valid UK driving license and willingness to travel frequently to various work sites across Scotland.
- Membership or eligibility for membership with a relevant professional body (e.g., BOHS, IOSH).
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification (MSc/PhD) in Industrial Hygiene or a related field.
- Chartered status with a professional body (e.g., Chartered Fellow of BOHS, CMIOSH).
- Experience in a specific industry sector relevant to Scottish economy (e.g., offshore energy, manufacturing, agriculture).
- Knowledge of ergonomic assessment tools and techniques.
- Experience with incident investigation techniques and root cause analysis.
