Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Scrub Nurse to join our dedicated surgical team in Derry/Londonderry. The successful candidate will play a critical role in assisting surgeons during operations, ensuring patient safety, maintaining sterile fields, and managing surgical equipment. You will work within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to positive patient outcomes and upholding the highest standards of clinical care.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating theatre and surgical equipment for procedures, ensuring all instruments are sterile and in working order.
- Assist the surgical team by anticipating needs, passing instruments, and maintaining a sterile environment throughout operations.
- Monitor the patient's condition during surgery, reporting any changes to the surgical team.
- Manage and account for all surgical instruments, swabs, and needles to prevent retained foreign objects.
- Ensure adherence to all infection control policies and procedures.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative care to patients as required.
- Participate in surgical team briefings and debriefings to ensure continuity of care and improve practice.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records.
Required Skills
- Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse (or eligibility to register).
- Minimum of 2 years post-registration experience as a Scrub Nurse in an acute surgical setting.
- Demonstrable knowledge of surgical procedures, aseptic techniques, and infection control.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-basic qualification in Perioperative Nursing.
- Experience across a range of surgical specialities (e.g., General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology).
- Evidence of leadership potential or experience mentoring junior staff.
