Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Coroner to join the New Brunswick Department of Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for investigating deaths that are sudden, unexpected, violent, or unexplained, to determine the cause and manner of death. This critical role involves conducting thorough investigations, collaborating with law enforcement and medical professionals, and providing official reports to ensure public safety and justice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate deaths reported to the Coroner's office, including scene examination, witness interviews, and medical record review.
  • Order and interpret post-mortem examinations, toxicology screens, and other specialized tests as required.
  • Determine the cause and manner of death, completing official death certificates and reports.
  • Liaise effectively with police, medical practitioners, forensic experts, and other relevant agencies.
  • Provide clear and concise expert testimony in court proceedings and inquests.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case records in accordance with provincial regulations.
  • Communicate sensitively and professionally with grieving families, providing information and support.
  • Participate in public health surveillance and injury prevention initiatives.
  • Adhere to all provincial laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines pertaining to the Coroner's duties.

Required Skills

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed to practice medicine in New Brunswick, or eligible for licensure.
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-residency experience, preferably in pathology, forensic medicine, emergency medicine, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical investigation and report writing.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and interviewing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proficiency in both English and French is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialization or certification in Forensic Pathology or Forensic Medicine.
  • Previous experience as a Coroner or Deputy Coroner.
  • Knowledge of the New Brunswick Coroner's Act and related legislation.
  • Experience with public speaking or presenting findings to diverse audiences.
