Job Description
We are seeking highly motivated, courageous, and dedicated individuals to join the San Antonio Fire Department as Firefighters. This critical role involves responding to emergency calls, suppressing fires, performing rescue operations, providing emergency medical care, and protecting the community from various hazards. Firefighters are integral members of a cohesive team, working collaboratively to maintain public safety, participate in community outreach, and ensure the operational readiness of fire apparatus and equipment. This position requires significant physical stamina, mental fortitude, and a strong commitment to public service.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond promptly and safely to emergency alarms including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and other calls for service.
- Operate and maintain a variety of fire suppression and rescue equipment, including engines, ladders, hoses, pumps, and specialized tools.
- Perform fire suppression activities, including laying hose, operating nozzles, ventilating structures, and conducting search and rescue operations.
- Provide basic and advanced life support to individuals experiencing medical emergencies, as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of fire apparatus, equipment, and fire stations.
- Participate in ongoing training, drills, and educational programs to enhance firefighting, rescue, and medical skills.
- Educate the public on fire safety, prevention, and emergency preparedness.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Maintain physical fitness standards and prepare for rigorous physical demands of the job.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver's License (Class B preferred upon hire or within probationary period)
- Ability to obtain Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Firefighter Certification within a specified timeframe (if not already certified)
- Ability to obtain Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) EMT-Basic Certification within a specified timeframe (if not already certified)
- Excellent physical condition, including strength, endurance, and agility
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills under pressure
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Commitment to public service and safety
- Must pass a comprehensive background check, physical examination, and psychological evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
- TCFP Basic Firefighter Certification
- DSHS EMT-Paramedic Certification
- Previous experience in emergency services, military, or a related field
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field
- Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish)
