Job Description
The Virginia Department of Accounts is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Forensic Accountant to join our dedicated team. This critical role involves investigating complex financial discrepancies, fraud, and misconduct within various state agencies and programs. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth financial investigations into alleged fraud, waste, and abuse within state government entities.

- Prepare detailed reports documenting findings, conclusions, and recommendations for corrective action.
- Interview witnesses and subjects, gathering relevant evidence and statements in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.
- Collaborate with law enforcement, legal counsel, and other government agencies on investigative matters.
- Develop and implement fraud detection and prevention strategies, providing training and guidance to agency personnel.
- Serve as an expert witness in administrative hearings, civil litigation, or criminal prosecutions, presenting complex financial information clearly and concisely.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and professional standards.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation.
- Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in forensic accounting, auditing, or financial investigation, preferably within a government or public sector environment.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP), auditing standards (GAAS), and forensic accounting techniques.
- Proven ability to analyze large volumes of financial data and identify fraudulent schemes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex financial issues to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in financial analysis software and database tools (e.g., Excel, ACL, IDEA, QuickBooks).
