Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Deputy Medical Examiner (Coroner) to join our dedicated team. This critical role involves conducting comprehensive death investigations to determine the cause and manner of death, often requiring collaboration with law enforcement, forensic specialists, and medical professionals. The Deputy Medical Examiner (Coroner) will perform autopsies, interpret complex medical and forensic data, and provide expert testimony in legal proceedings. This position demands a high level of precision, ethical conduct, and empathy, contributing significantly to public health and safety within the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive death investigations in accordance with state laws and established medical examiner protocols.
  • Perform autopsies and external examinations to determine cause and manner of death.
  • Collect and preserve evidence, including biological samples, for forensic analysis.
  • Interpret laboratory results, medical histories, and scene investigation findings to formulate accurate conclusions.
  • Prepare detailed forensic reports and accurate death certificates within statutory timelines.
  • Liaise effectively with law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys, funeral directors, and healthcare providers.
  • Provide expert testimony in court, depositions, and other legal proceedings.
  • Participate in on-call rotations for emergent death investigations.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adherence to ethical guidelines and professional standards.

Required Skills

  • Medical Doctor (MD or DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology and/or Forensic Pathology.
  • Valid medical license in the State of Rhode Island or eligibility for licensure.
  • Demonstrated experience in forensic pathology and death investigation.
  • Proficiency in performing complex autopsies and meticulous evidence collection.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills for complex cases.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing and expert testimony.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team under pressure.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to travel to various scenes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in a Medical Examiner's or Coroner's office.
  • Experience with mass fatality planning and response protocols.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal laws pertaining to death investigation.
  • Additional certifications in forensic specialties or public health.
