Job Description
Shelby County Schools is seeking a dedicated and reliable Janitor / Custodian to join our facilities team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and general upkeep of school facilities to ensure a safe, healthy, and inviting environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role requires attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. A background check is a mandatory requirement for this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash removal in classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies regularly.
- Clean windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces.
- Operate cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, scrubbers, and vacuum cleaners.
- Handle minor maintenance tasks and report major repair needs to supervisors.
- Ensure school buildings and grounds are secure at the end of the shift.
- Assist with setting up and taking down equipment for school events and activities.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines, including the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals.
- Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and report needs to supervisor.
- Respond promptly to spills and other cleaning emergencies.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in janitorial or custodial services
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies
- Ability to operate basic cleaning equipment
- Strong attention to detail and thoroughness
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Physical stamina and strength to perform duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Experience working in a school or educational environment
- Basic knowledge of minor building maintenance and repairs
