Job Description

We are seeking a highly qualified and dedicated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) to join our specialized medical team in Cambridge, MA. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting comprehensive medical evaluations and issuing medical certificates to pilots and air traffic controllers, ensuring their compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. This role requires an in-depth understanding of aviation medicine, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and regulatory adherence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough medical examinations for pilots and air traffic controllers in accordance with FAA standards and guidelines (14 CFR Part 67).
  • Evaluate medical history, conduct physical examinations, and interpret diagnostic tests to determine fitness for aviation duties.
  • Issue, deny, or defer FAA medical certificates (First, Second, and Third Class) based on established criteria.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential medical records in compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Provide guidance and consultation to aviation personnel regarding medical conditions and FAA requirements.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and FAA officials as necessary to ensure comprehensive care and compliance.
  • Stay current with changes in FAA regulations, medical protocols, and aviation medicine best practices through continuous education.
  • Educate applicants on preventive health measures and lifestyle choices pertinent to aviation safety and long-term health.

Required Skills

  • Medical Doctor (MD/DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, unrestricted medical license in the state of Massachusetts.
  • Valid FAA Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) certification (all classes).
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience post-residency, preferably in a relevant specialty.
  • In-depth knowledge of FAA regulations (14 CFR Part 67) and aviation physiology.
  • Excellent diagnostic and clinical judgment skills, with an ability to make critical decisions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, capable of interacting effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and standard office software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board certification in Aerospace Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.
  • Experience working directly with a diverse population of pilots and air traffic controllers.
  • Previous experience in a high-volume clinical setting, demonstrating efficiency and thoroughness.
  • Familiarity with the HIMS AME program (Human Intervention Motivation Study for substance abuse).
