Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our dedicated team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, treat, and manage patients with a wide range of respiratory conditions, including acute and chronic diseases.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of respiratory equipment, such as ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP machines, and nebulizers.
  • Administer therapeutic gases, aerosols, and humidity as prescribed by physicians.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures including pulmonary function tests and blood gas analysis.
  • Educate patients and their families on respiratory care techniques, disease management, and preventative measures.
  • Participate in emergency response situations, including intubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Document patient care, progress, and interventions accurately and thoroughly in electronic health records.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and national guidelines for respiratory care.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and training to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Respiratory Therapy or a related field.
  • Current professional registration and licensure to practice as a Respiratory Therapist (or eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council – HCPC).
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as a Respiratory Therapist in an acute care setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in operating and troubleshooting respiratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in pulmonary function testing and arterial blood gas interpretation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) to a professional working standard.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Respiratory Therapy or a related health science discipline.
  • Experience with electronic patient record systems (e.g., EPIC, Cerner).
  • Specialized certifications in areas such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Previous experience working within an NHS Trust or a similar public healthcare system.
