Job Description

Sysco Arizona is seeking a dedicated and experienced Aquaculture Technician, also suitable for individuals with a strong Fisherman/Fisherwoman background, to join our specialized team in Gilbert, Arizona. This unique opportunity includes visa sponsorship for qualified candidates. In this role, you will be instrumental in managing and overseeing aspects of our aquaculture product quality, handling, and potential local sourcing initiatives. You will apply your hands-on expertise in aquatic environments to ensure the highest standards of product integrity from source to our distribution network. While based in Gilbert, this role may involve fieldwork at various aquaculture sites or processing facilities within the region, focused on species like Tilapia, Catfish, or Trout. This position requires a deep understanding of fish health, harvesting techniques, and sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations related to aquaculture product handling, including feeding, monitoring fish health, and water quality control.
  • Perform skilled harvesting and netting techniques, ensuring humane and efficient collection of aquatic species.
  • Inspect and sort aquaculture products for quality, size, and adherence to company and regulatory standards.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment used in aquaculture, including pumps, aeration systems, and harvesting tools.
  • Implement and uphold strict biosecurity and safety protocols in all aquatic environments and processing areas.
  • Maintain accurate records of stock levels, growth rates, water parameters, and harvest yields.
  • Collaborate with supply chain and quality assurance teams to optimize product flow and ensure freshness.
  • Assist in the identification and assessment of potential local aquaculture partners and sustainable sourcing opportunities.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior staff on best practices in fish handling and aquaculture operations.

Required Skills

  • Proven practical experience as a Fisherman/Fisherwoman or Aquaculture Technician (minimum 3 years).
  • Strong knowledge of fish biology, aquatic ecosystems, and common aquaculture practices.
  • Proficiency in fish handling, netting, and harvesting techniques.
  • Ability to operate and maintain specialized aquaculture and basic mechanical equipment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and animal welfare.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in varied outdoor weather conditions, including wet environments.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal education or certification in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Fisheries Management, or a related field.
  • Experience with specific freshwater aquaculture species relevant to Arizona (e.g., Tilapia, Catfish, Trout).
  • Forklift operation certification or experience.
  • Basic electrical and plumbing troubleshooting skills.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
